21 Savage and Metro Boomin drop a “Chopped & Screwed” version of ‘Savage Mode II’

Atlanta natives 21 Savage and Metro Boomin infuse their new album Savage Mode II with a genre of rap popularized by Texas emcees in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Chopped and Screwed, popularized by the late great DJ Screw, slowed rap songs down to the point where the artists sounded like they were dozing off while recording. However, Screw and his group, Screwed Up Click, lit Texas on fire and eventually brought the sound to the mainstream with UGK and Three 6 Mafia’s “Sippin on some Syrup.” Since then, everyone across the rap spectrum from Lil Wayne to Travis Scott draws influence from Chopped and Screwed.

In order to pay homage in the best way possible, Savage and Metro enlisted the help of veteran chopped and screwed producers DJ OG Ron C & The Chopstars. The tape has gained support from many Texas OGs including Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul.
